Perth to increase in attractiveness for

international students

15 November 2019

Perth will soon be a more attractive destination for international students.  On 26 October 2019 the Commonwealth Government announced that Perth’s status as a regional city will be reinstated, with the change coming into effect on 16 November 2019.   The change will enable international students to access incentives to undertake their study in Perth.

View the media statement for more information

This change is in addition to the recent announcement to extend the graduate stream of the State Nominated Migration Program to include vocational education and training (VET) graduates.  The first invitation round to include VET graduates will be issued in December 2019.  The Graduate Occupation List will be expanded to include occupations for VET graduates, and the criteria will be amended to make it easier for international students to meet the eligibility requirements.

Amendments to eligibility criteria:

  • Studies in higher education, VET and/or English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) will all count towards the requirement to study for two years in Western Australia.

  • Work experience in job offer requirements will also be reduced.  Graduates will need to either demonstrate six months of work experience or a six month employment contract, but not both.  Currently international students need to have 12 months of work experience plus a job offer for 12 months.

A new Graduate Occupation List and updated eligibility criteria for the graduate stream will be published on the migration portal prior to the December invitation round.

For further information on requirements for the graduate stream of the State Nominated Migration Program visit the migration portal.
